The minds behind UQMind…

IMG_4312.jpg

UQMind is a branch of the University of Queensland Medical Society (UQMS). The UQMind Chair sits on the UQMS management committee. The two Vice-Chairs (Phase 1 and 2) work alongside the Chair to facilitate events, campaigns and initiatives for the coming year. Under each Vice-Chair are the portfolio-specific convenors who oversee and manage particular events.

CHAIR: Heather

The UQMind Chair sits on the UQ Medical Society (UQMS)  management committee, as the advocate and representative for medical student mental health and wellbeing. The Chair also liases with external mental health organizations, such as DHASQ.

If Heather wasn’t in med, she’d probably be a maths teacher! 👩‍💼 She’s been getting through isolation by bingeing “You Can’t Ask That” and playing boardgames with her fam. 🎲 If she could choose anyone to have dinner with it’d be her brother (but this may or may not be contingent on him making creme brûlée). 👨‍🍳 When asked her fave body system, she responded with, “How great are placentas?? Only temporary organ WOW.” 😛

PHASE 1 VICE CHAIR: Oliver

The Phase 1 Vice-Chair coordinates and assists with all activities aimed at Phase 1 students – including coffee mornings, Blue Week, symposium, and social media campaigns.

If Ollie could be someone else for a day, he’d be “someone with time-management skills so I can see how the other half live.” ⌚️⌚️ He’s been spending isolation touching base with his mates 💻 and bingeing “Sex Education” (cause he’s a detty pig). 🐷 His top dinner guest would be Dave Le’aupepe 🎸 and his go-to drunk food is HSP. 🍟

PHASE 2 VICE CHAIR: Eva

The Phase 2 Vice-Chair coordinates and assists with all activities aimed at Phase 2 students – including coffee mornings, Death Cafes, MiS Buddy Program and our Book Club.

If Eva wasn’t in med, she’d probably be a language teacher 👩‍🏫 and if she could be anyone else for a day, it’d be Professor McGonagall. 🧙‍♀️ She’s been getting through isolation by doing backyard workouts with her housemates 💪 and bingeing Peaky Blinders/Vampire diaries (no hate pls it’s iso times). 😛🧛‍♂️🧛‍♀️ Her list of top dinner guests ranges from Michelle Obama to Jacinda Arden to Sarah Paulson to Jerry from Navarro!

BLUE WEEK & MORNING TEA CO-CONVENOR: Kitty

Our Blue Week team is dedicated to providing an awesome Blue Week in Semester 2! This includes our Symposium, Wellbeing Festival (held in conjunction with the UQMS affiliates), and other activities dedicated to promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Coffee Mornings are UQMind’s signature event! These events aim to raise awareness and facilitate discussion about medical student mental health and wellbeing. These are held regularly at metro sites as well as at each rural clinical school.

Kitty is one of our Blue Week Co-Convenors AND one of our Morning Tea Co-Convenors! If she could be anyone else for a day it’d be “anyone from Broadway — I’m kinda obsessed” and so it isn’t surprising her top dinner guest would be Lin-Manuel Miranda. 🎼 Her fave iso pastime has been catching up on her Netflix/Stan watch list. 📺 Most recently she’s been bingeing “Younger”. Favourite quote: “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” ☺️

BLUE WEEK CO-CONVENOR: Nathan

Our Blue Week team is dedicated to providing an awesome Blue Week in Semester 2! This includes our Symposium, Wellbeing Festival (held in conjunction with the UQMS affiliates), and other activities dedicated to promoting mental health and wellbeing.

Nathan is also a Blue Week Co-Convenor! He’s been getting through isolation with Zoom game nights 🎲💻 and by bingeing “Community”. 📺 His go-to drunk food is Pad Thai and his go-to CBL food is brownies with salt and vinegar chips 🍫🥔 — that combo sounds a little hard on the stomach, but we’ll leave that for him to decide considering GI is one of his fave body systems!!

MORNING TEA CO-CONVENOR: Sumana

Coffee Mornings are UQMind’s signature event! These events aim to raise awareness and facilitate discussion about medical student mental health and wellbeing. These are held regularly at metro sites as well as at each rural clinical school.

Sumana has been spending isolation baking 👩‍🍳 and bingeing One Tree Hill (when she’s not being entertained by the Tiger King of course). Her normal bedtime is usually a chill 10 PM….but iso has definitely changed that by a few hours! 😅 She’s not sure what she’d be doing if she wasn’t in med 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ but she is pretty sure that after a night of drinking, her fave drunk food is muesli bars! 😝

PHASE 1 ENGAGEMENT: James

Our engagement team are in charge of our social media and outreach projects – including Facebook, Instagram and our website, helping to create a stronger online UQMind presence. They also design posters and flyers to help advertise our events.

If James wasn’t in medical school, he’d probably be a professional musician! 🎸He’s been spending his days in isolation procrastinating by playing video games 🎮 and bingeing Tiger King (of course). 😜 If he could be someone else for a day, he would be one of his doggos — everything seems just so much more simple. Favourite quote: “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend- inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” 🐶🐾

SYMPOSIUM CONVENOR: Abiola

The UQMind Symposium is the highlight of Blue Week (and often the highlight of the year)! This event is our chance to get serious about medical student mental health and wellbeing, and discuss the pressing and pertinent issues surrounding the area.

Abiola’s fave iso activities these days include bingeing “On My Block” and BAKING 👩‍🍳 — she may have had a few too many cookies over the last few weeks! 🍪🍪 This might explain why her go to CBL snack is also choc chip cookies — maybe she could make them one day for Gordon Ramsay who is her top dinner guest (he’d have to make the dinner of course)! 🍝 Although we’re unsure what Gordon would think of her go-to drunk food of Maccas! 😛🍟

PHASE 2 ENGAGEMENT: Hillarie

Our engagement team are in charge of our social media and outreach projects – including Facebook, Instagram and our website, helping to create a stronger online UQMind presence. They also design posters and flyers to help advertise our events.

Hillarie’s favourite body system is repro 😉 and her go to CBL snack is a Charcuterie board (although it always has to be served with olive dip). 🤤😜 If Hillarie wasn’t studying medicine, she’d probably be a physiotherapist/yoga instructor, and if she could be anyone else for a day, it’d be Victoria’s Secret Angel Romee Strijd, who is always #livingherbestlife. 💁🏼‍♀️ Top dinner guest: her mom ❤️ (which we’re sure is something that resonates with all international students!)

METRO EVENTS CONVENOR: Karen

Our Events team is focused on implementing and helping to deliver events for students located at metropolitan clinical sites! This includes coffee mornings, Death Cafes, Book Club, and assisting in the running of Blue Week.

If Karen wasn’t in medicine, she would probably be disowned 😜….jk jk probably a vet, music therapist, or skydiving instructor‼️ She’s been getting through isolation by bingeing Schitt’s Creek, learning Spanish, and doing a lot more singing and songwriting. 🎼🎤 And so it isn’t surprising that if this SUPER talented lady could be anyone for a day, it would be Wonder Woman. 💪 Her favourite quote: “This too shall pass.” ❤️

IMG_7289+-+UQMind+Rural+Events+%281%29.jpg

RURAL & REMOTE EVENTS: Abigail

Our Events team is focused on implementing and delivering events for students who are based at rural clinical schools! This includes coffee mornings, Death Cafes, Book Club, and the MiS buddy program.

If Abigail wasn’t in medicine, she’d probably be midwife 👶 and so we’ll assume that’s why her fave body system is repro! 😉😉 She’s a pretty #wholesome gal, considering that her fave isolation pastime has been tending to her veggie garden and worm farm 🌱🍆🥒 Her top dinner guest at the moment would be “literally anyone” #COVID-19, though she probably wouldn’t be the one cooking given that she’s still proud of the time she made tacos and cob loaf for her CBL fam 2 years ago 🌮🍞…she’s not an avid cook so that was a big show of love. 💗💗
